Choccy Box
// Orangetheory alternative · For studios going independent

Run heart-rate-style classes without the OTF royalty bundle.

Orangetheory bundles heart-rate hardware, programming, branding, and operations under one franchise. Choccy Box only ships the orchestration layer — multi-zone TV display, station timing, audio cues, trainer remote — so you can pair it with any HR system you like, run your own programming, keep your brand, and skip the royalty structure.

// The trend

Why operators are leaving Orangetheory in 2026.

  • Royalty plus marketing-fund structure means margin compresses as revenue grows.
  • Programming is centralised; you can’t adapt for your members or differentiate on training quality.
  • OTbeat hardware lock-in means renewal pricing isn’t market-tested.
  • Branding constraints prevent differentiation on member experience or studio identity.
  • Heart-rate-zone training is now commoditised — MyZone, Polar, and Apple Watch deliver the same member feedback loop without the franchise overhead.
  • Independent HIIT studios competing on price and authenticity are pulling members from franchise locations.
// At a glance

Orangetheory vs Choccy Box.

Orangetheory Fitness bundles a franchise relationship with the operational tooling. Choccy Box only ships the operational layer — and lets you own everything around it.

Choccy Box vs Orangetheory Fitness — side-by-side comparison
Capability Orangetheory Fitness Choccy Box
Programming model Centralised heart-rate-zone programming designed at OTF HQ; local studios deliver, do not design. Independent. Build station-based, interval, or HR-style programming. Compose your own templates.
Royalty / fee structure Initial franchise fee, weekly royalty, marketing fund contribution. À-la-carte per location, no royalties on revenue.
Heart-rate hardware OTbeat (proprietary chest/wrist straps, OTbeat Burn). Required. Bring your own — Polar, MyZone, Wahoo, Apple Watch, anything. Choccy Box doesn’t prescribe HR hardware.
Class display OTbeat tower / TV showing zone time and splat points, single-screen. Multi-screen, station-specific layouts, 1Hz sync across every TV. Run treadmill, rower, and floor zones with their own displays.
Branding Orangetheory name, colours, and orange splat are non-negotiable. Your gym name. Your colour palette. Your class names. Your identity.
Offline operation Class playback depends on internet for full feature set. Offline-first. Edge unit holds schedule, video, audio, and station state locally.
Member data Splat-point and zone history sits in the OTF ecosystem and member app. On your hardware at your location. Pair with any HR app for member-facing dashboards.
Territory protection Granted by franchise agreement. No restrictions. You compete on your own terms.
Music licensing Centralised playlists; royalty handling abstracted via the franchise. Bring your own — Spotify Business, Soundtrack, etc. Choccy Box handles the orchestration, not music rights.
// You keep

What you keep when you leave Orangetheory.

  • Your members, your coaches, your equipment
  • Your treadmill / rower / floor split format if you want it
  • Your booking and billing tools (MindBody, Glofox, ClassPass relationships)
  • Your music subscription (Spotify Business, Soundtrack, etc.)
  • The 45-to-60-minute HR-style class format your members already love
// You gain

What Choccy Box gives you in return.

  • HR-system flexibility

    Pair with MyZone, Polar, Wahoo, Apple Watch — whatever your members already use. No proprietary hardware lock-in.

  • Concurrent zones, native

    Treadmill / rower / floor splits ship out of the box. Each zone gets its own screen, its own timer, perfectly synchronised through the Edge unit.

  • Wave-based class support

    Stagger starts between two groups rotating across zones. Configure waves once in Command Center; the Edge unit handles cues automatically.

  • Programming control

    Design your own intervals, your own zone targets, your own week-to-week progressions. No corporate template forcing the same class globally.

  • Brand ownership

    Your gym name on every screen. Your colour. Your tone. Members come for you, not the orange.

  • Margin recovery

    À-la-carte per location with no royalty. The structural change shows up in the P&L from month one.

// Migration path

From Orangetheory to live in weeks, not months.

01

Confirm exit timing with a franchise lawyer

Notice periods, post-termination restrictions, and brand-handover requirements differ by region. Get clarity before signalling intent.

02

Pick your HR replacement (or skip it)

Most operators choose MyZone for plug-and-play continuity. Some go with Polar for higher accuracy at scale. Some skip member-facing HR entirely and lean into perceived effort.

03

Edge unit installs at each location

Pre-configured, drop-in, runs silent. Apple TVs at each zone. Trainer iPhone or iPad. A couple of hours per location.

04

Build the class catalogue around your formats

We map your wave-based, multi-zone class structures into Choccy Box. Most studios are programming-ready in two to three weeks.

05

Trainer training + dry runs, then go live

Coaches drive Choccy Box from an iPhone. Two coaching sessions and a few dry runs after hours, then switch-over day.

// Orangetheory migration FAQ

Common
questions.

Is Choccy Box a heart-rate-training platform like Orangetheory?
No, and that's intentional. Heart-rate hardware (Polar, MyZone, Wahoo, Apple Watch, OTbeat-style chest straps) is a different product category. Choccy Box is the class-orchestration layer above the HR layer — station displays, timing, audio cues, multi-zone sync. Pair Choccy Box with whichever HR system you prefer, and you get the OTF-style heart-rate experience without the OTF licensing bundle.
Can I run a treadmill / rower / floor split-zone class with Choccy Box?
Yes — that's literally what Concurrent Zones is for. Each TV can show different exercises with independent timers, all synchronised through the Edge unit. Run treadmill intervals on screen 1, rower work on screen 2, floor strength on screen 3 — same class, same start time, different content per zone.
How does the migration work if I'm leaving Orangetheory?
Same playbook as any franchise exit: review your contract with a franchise lawyer, agree the notice period, pick a switch-over date, then layer the technical migration on top. Edge unit ships and configures in a week. Programming gets rebuilt around your existing class formats. Trainers retrain on the iPhone remote. Members keep coming.
What about OTbeat — the heart-rate hardware?
OTbeat is OTF-proprietary; you can't take it with you. The good news is you don't need to: any modern HR system (MyZone is the most common drop-in replacement, Polar is solid, Apple Watch works for members who already have one) does the same job. Members get the same feedback loop. The data lives in your chosen HR app, not the OTF ecosystem.
Will I lose the splat-point gamification?
Splat points are an OTF trademark concept. The general mechanic — colour-coded HR zones, points for time in upper zones, public leaderboards — is what every modern HR system supports. MyZone calls them MEPs, Polar uses Energy Points. Pick your HR system, pick the metric name, run it on your screens via Choccy Box.
Can Choccy Box handle the OTF 'wave-based' class structure?
Yes. The Choccy Box phase-based timing engine handles wave starts (members in two groups rotating between zones at staggered times). Configure the wave intervals once in Command Center; the Edge unit cues each wave on the right screens at the right time.
What does it cost vs my Orangetheory royalty?
Final pricing on launch — but the structural difference is decisive: à-la-carte per location, no royalty on revenue. Operators with high member counts typically see the biggest swing because OTF royalties scale with revenue while Choccy Box doesn't. Book a discovery call for a numbers-specific comparison.
